One Friday morning, a young lady and her carer arrived at the Huon Community Health Centre for a speech pathology appointment. The Health Centre has speech pathology, but only on Wednesdays.
From the name of the speech pathologist and the description of the address, the receptionist was able to help the ladies, and worked out that the appointment was at another location in Huonville.
The young lady and her carer were unfamiliar with this location so the receptionist went with them to the front of the Health Centre to give directions so they could walk there. The ladies decided it might be too far to walk so a wheelchair was offered. They thanked the receptionist for this but decided to drive instead once she explained there was ample parking by the business.
The Huon Community Health Centre is a member of The Right Place.
The Right Place is a Huon Valley initiative which aims to better connect people with health and community services the first time they seek help regardless of where they ask. This means asking an organisation for help even if it’s not their core business, such as asking someone at the bank where to get help for a dental problem!
You can tell who is a member of The Right Place by a special sticker on the front door or in the window. When you see this sticker you know that you can go in to this business or organisation and ask for help and the person you talk to will:
- take the time to listen to you
- offer to provide you with information such a writing something down, drawing a map, or explaining the information to you verbally
- make a phone call on your behalf if you wish.
All The Right Place members are listed on the website here: http://www.therightplace.org.au
The Right Place is also spreading around Tasmania and you can find out who is involved by looking on the website!
