Seniors Week aims to improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing, facilitate community participation and activity by older people, and enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.
This year Seniors Week ran from 12-18 Oct, however the Huon Valley decided that our seniors deserve a whole month of recognition and appreciation. As a result Huon Regional Care and the Huon Valley Council decided to work together to coordinate a calendar of events which offered a range of different activities and events for seniors to attend, relax and have fun. These events are being put on by various organisations in the Huon Valley including, the Council, Huon Regional Care, Port Cygnet’s Men’s Shed, Huon LINC, Girl Guides and Wayraparattee Child and Family Centre.
One of these events was the Seniors Afternoon Tea which was held on Wednesday 18th of October at the Huonville RSL.
Almost 70 seniors attended. Commissioner Adriana Taylor from the Huon Valley Council opened the event with DayStar Duo Alisa and Rob providing live music and singing throughout the afternoon. Huonville high school students who are studying a course in hospitality came along to make the food for the afternoon tea and walked around the tables with platters so seniors could pick which delicious items they wanted to eat. The Huon Regional Care Men’s Group also had a stall selling their woodworking wares.
Miranda Wageman, the Council’s Positive Ageing Officer did a fantastic job of putting the event together. This is a yearly event so if you or anyone you know would like to attend in 2018 please contact the Council on 6264 0300.
